BIOMES AND HABITATS Slides order #SS-0566..........$99.95
An introduction to and overview of 8 major biomes, their weather, flora-faunal
characteristics and ecological interactions. Covers temperate deciduous forest,
coniferous forest, grasslands, chaparral, deserts, tundra and marine and freshwater
habitats. 8O frames and guides (no cassettes).
CONTENT SAMPLE: 1. Deserts result from extremely harsh environmental conditions.
Days are very hot and nights cold, with the temperature varying as much as 50° C diurnally.
Such drastic temperature variations result from the desert's lack of humidity. In humid environ-
ments, clouds and other atmospheric moisture absorb a good portion of the incident infrared
(heat) radiation from the sun, and the land itself may receive only 40% of the impinging heat. In
the desert, this does not happen: virtually all the incident infrared radiation reaches the ground.
At night heat is reradiated from the land to the atmosphere, but in humid environments
much of this is again deflected by atmospheric moisture back toward the earth. In the desert,
the scarcity of atmospheric moisture and land cover does not prevent complete reradiation, and
essentially all of the day's heat is lost as soon as the sun sets.

SURVEY OF ENVIRONMENTS Slides order #SS-0115S.............$79.95
An excellent, concise introduction to the basic concepts of ecology. Begins
with very broad generalizations, narrowing down to the five major environments--or
biomes--and their biotic and abiotic components. Striking photography details the
structure and function of marine, freshwater, desert, mountain and prairie habitats.
Narration and pace are suited to younger students and remedial science classes. 50
frames, cassette, guide. Video, slides or filmstrip. (Video order SS-0115V......$59.95,
filmstrip order #SS-0115F...........$15.00.)
CONTENT SAMPLE:
37. Mountain biomes often receive heavy rain and snowfall.
38. Altitude zonation resembles that of latitudinal zones.
39. The highest altitudes have sparse tundra plants and animals adapted to low
temperatures.
40. The next zone is of pines and firs--coniferous forest.

WORLD BIOMES Slides order #SS-0130S...........$42.50
A quick introductory look at 1O major biomes, their differences and similarities,
flora and fauna: Arctic tundra, alpine tundra, northern coniferous forest, temperate
deciduous forest, tropical deciduous forest, tropical rain forest, chaparral and woodland,
savanna, grassland and desert. 2O frames & guide. (Filmstrip #SS-0130F.......$15.00.)
CONTENT SAMPLE: 11. The tropical deciduous forests are considered an ecotone by
some scientists. These forests occur in tropical regions where the rain is not continuous, and
long droughts prevent the invasion of evergreens.

PACIFIC ISLAND BIOLOGY Slides order #SS-0110S............$72.50
There are two basic island types: continental and oceanic, whose ecologies are
quite different. This carefully selected group of images surveys terrestrial, aquatic, and
submarine habitats. Beautiful color photography and succinct graphics introduce and
detail the various reefs, their formation and resulting islands. Shows fauna and flora
peculiar to each habitat: royal tern, coconut palm, Plumeria, swallowtail butterfly,
Galapagos iguana and tortoise, gecko, coconut crab, blind snake, monitor lizard, giant
clam, black sea urchin, puffer fish, nudibranchs, moray eel, gray shark, and many
others. 40 frames, cassette and guide. (Filmstrip SS-0110F......$15.00.)
CONTENT SAMPLE: 17. The Samoan Islands lie about 15 degrees off the equator and
have a relatively low rainfall (though frequent clouds because of water evaporation). Generally, the
equatorial islands have the lowest rainfall while the more polar islands have the highest rainfall.
Thus latitude is correlated with the floral complement of an island.
