CONTENT SAMPLE: 6. Coral atolls are confined to tropical waters in the Indian
and Pacific Oceans, where they sometimes occur in archipelagoes. The presence of coral atolls
rising from deep oceanic waters is puzzling, especially since active growth of reef-building corals
is confined to the upper 20 m or so of the water column. Charles Darwin investigated coral atolls
aboard the Beagle in the 1830's and proposed a theory for their formation that is widely accepted
today. Shown in this frame are diagrams illustrating Darwin's theory.
Darwin proposed that coral atolls were initially fringing reefs that surrounded a volcanic
island (a). After a volcano had risen above the ocean surface corals began to grow in shallow
waters along its flanks. Eventually the great bulk of the volcanic island caused it to gradually
subside due to isostatic adjustments in the sea floor (b). Weathering and erosion also helped to
reduce the island's height above sea level. Meanwhile wave action on the fringing reef produced
quantities of coral rubble. Some of this was swept down the seaward slope and thereby
contributed to the lateral growth of the reef. Other coral debris was deposited in the near-shore
waters where it accumulated to form a shallow, ring-shaped lagoon. Coral growth maintained
the reef within the sunlit, surface waters as the volcanic mountain continued to subside.
Eventually the island sank below the surface of the ocean, and coral rubble created a central
lagoon. Storms and currents eventually piled up coral debris along the margin of the reef to form
the concentric series of atoll islands (c).
Support for Darwin's theory was obtained in 1952 when a deep-drilling rig twice hit
volcanic rock on Eniwetok Atoll after passing through 1250 m and 1400 m of shallow-water lime-
stones. This span of reef formations extended back to Eocene times, some 60 million years ago.
