Presents the build-up of Kepone, an insecticide, in the James River in Virginia.
Now Kepone is gradually moving toward Chesapeake Bay and is accumulating in the
food chain.
Recounts the accidental introduction of polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) into
cattle feed in Michigan. As a result, more than 30,000 cattle were destroyed and nearly
all Michigan’s 9 million residents had PBB in their bodies within a year.
The story of PCBs, a widely used industrial chemical for nearly 50 years,
banned in 1979 after production of 1 1/2 trillion pounds when found to have serious health
effects.
Tells about Love Canal, in Niagara Falls, New York, which has come to
symbolize the health hazards associated with toxic waste dumps.

54. Federal authorities estimate that there are over 32,000 chemical disposal sites
nationwide.
55. And over 6,000 of these sites pose imminent danger to public health and safety
according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

disposal practices.
