SCIENTIFIC METHOD Slides order #SS-0485S...........$49.95
An experimental study guiding the student in the use of scientific discipline.
This unique presentation focuses on the inquiry process. Charts, artwork and live
photography are combined to direct students to channel in facts and draw out ideas,
make observations, pose questions, form hypotheses, design experiments, and
formulate theories. 21 frames, cassette and guide. (Filmstrip SS-0485F......$15.00.)
CONTENT SAMPLE: 12. Formally speaking, a hypothesis or theory can never directly
be proven true. Instead, it can only be disproved. The experimental procedure is actually an
attempt to disprove the hypothesis proposed. Oftentimes one part of a general hypothesis my
be disproved, and then increasingly precise alternative hypotheses will be formed and tested.
Once a hypothesis has won evidence and support by withstanding several attempts at disproof; it
becomes a theory and eventually may be promoted to the status of a known fact or law of
science.
In our example problem, we shall hypothesize that the answer is “yes, sunlight is
essential to the vitality of green plants.” Anyone can wonder and postulate as to possible
reasons or outcomes for a particular set of circumstances, but what really separates the
scientist from the layman or philosopher is the next step in the scientific method.
