IN VITRO RESEARCH: AN INTRODUCTION Order #624..........$42.50
An introduction to the methods, apparatus and philosophies of in vitro research.
Step-by-step presentation shows the removal of fresh brain tissue from a laboratory rat;
studies involving electrical activity of nerve cells; the effect of lack of oxygen and of drugs
used in treatment of central nervous system disorders. Humane treatment of subject is
emphasized. 20 slides and guide.
CONTENT SAMPLE: 27202 The advantages of the in vitro method lie in the
accessibility of the tissue to experimental manipulations. Here we see brain tissue slices in the
incubation chamber. Since the tissue is clearly visible, measuring instruments can be precisely
placed under direct visual guidance, often under a low power microscope. Drugs can be applied
directly, temperature can be changed and delicate manipulations can be performed without
interference from movement caused by the animal's breathing or pulse.
In vitro research has one additional advantage, important to some people, that is based
not on technical but on humane reasons. In some cases the needed tissue samples can be
harmlessly removed from an animal, causing it no more discomfort than you feel when having
your blood drawn. In other cases, including the preparation of brain slices, it is true that the
animal must be killed. This is done, however, in a painless manner with the animal being "put to
sleep" in much the same way that people are anesthetized for dental work or surgery. Some of
the photographs you will see in this presentation may seem rather gruesome, but be assured
that before the first cut is made, the animal is clinically dead and has absolutely no awareness
or feeling of what is happening.
One point cannot be emphasized too strongly. The procedures you will see in this
presentation may look simple, but they are extremely difficult and can be done only by people
with the proper training. Under no circumstances should they be attempted by anyone other
than trained, qualified scientists.
