ORDER PSITTACIFORMES
FAMILY PSITTACIDAE--PARROTS
The order Psittaciformes contains only one family, the parrots or Psittacidae, comprised
of 82 genera and about 316 species. Parrots are tropical to temperate birds which inhabit South
America--especially the Amazon Basin--New Zealand, Australia and Tasmania. The various
species are known by many names, including parakeet, lorikeet, budgerigar, cockatoo, tory and
macaw. Nearly all are gregarious and noisy. Most are arboreal forest dwellers, but some,
especially the Australian species, live primarily on the ground.
All parrots have a strong, stout, sharply-hooked bill. Most eat fruits and berries, but the
Australian species which feed on the ground eat seeds primarily. The New Zealand kea (Nestor
notabilis) and kaku (N. meridionalis) are scavenging parrots which live almost entirely on carrion.
Other species often supplement their diets with insects, nuts or nectar.
Parrots, especially the forest species, are brightly colored, boldly patterned birds. Yet
they remain well-camouflaged within the forest canopy. Most species show no sexual
dimorphism in coloration. Long lived birds, some have lived 80 years or more in captivity.
Parrots have feet and toes especially adapted for climbing trees--two toes extend forward
and two backward for grasping. In climbing, they frequently use both feet and bill to pull
themselves along. They may also use their feet for grasping food, which they then hold up to eat.
Rather sedentary birds, most parrots nest in holes in trees, in rock crevices or in termite
mounds. Little or no nest material is gathered, and eggs are usually laid on a bare surface. The
young, hatched after some three weeks incubation, are altricial and mature slowly.
