CONTENT SAMPLE: 15535 Unlike some other birds of prey that hunt by soaring
high over the ground watching for movement, or by keeping vigil from a high vantage point, these
birds tend to hunt by quartering slowly back and forth near or below the tree tops. Their silent
flight enables them to surprise prey concealed by the foliage.

The African crowned eagle (Stephanoaetus coronatus), sometimes known as the crowned
hawk eagle, is found throughout the tropical rain forests of Africa. It is one of the most powerful
eagles and can lift heavy prey almost vertically. A remarkably agile and fast predator, in forested
areas it preys extensively on monkeys and is a great threat to them. In more open areas it preys
on ground animals such as duikers, the young of large antelope, hyrax and game birds.

Like other birds of prey that require relatively large prey species, crowned eagles are
thinly distributed--pairs nest as much as 10 miles apart--and individual pairs hunt over a very
large range.

Crowned hawk eagles tend to nest in somewhat isolated trees. This protects them from
attack by arboreal animals out to steal eggs or young. Usually two eggs are laid which hatch in
about 50 days. The stronger of the two chicks typically kills the weaker, thus insuring its own
food supply.

Large nests of sticks are built 60 to 70 ft. above the ground. Nests are used year after
year and some are known to have been in use regularly for over 75 years, presumably by
successive pairs of birds, since the zoo longevity record for this species is only about 30 years.
Animals skulls and bones accumulate beneath an occupied nest.

REVIEWS: “...emphasizes the ecology, economic value, behavior and conservation of
these beneficial birds.... Of...interest to teachers of natural history, conservation, ecology, and
ornithology.” Previews.

FALCONRY--THE SPORT OF KINGS Order #429..........$42.50

The royal sport as practiced today in the U.S. The bird, equipment, training and
hunt are presented in detail in both text and pictures. 20 slides and guide.

CONTENT SAMPLE: 24106 The language of falconry is filled with wonderfully medieval
words like eyass, branched hack, imp, Tess, and mew. Falconers tend to see themselves as a
rather elite group, and their nomenclature can be very confusing to the uninitiated, but a little
study clears up most problems. An eyass is a bird that has been taken out of the nest. A
branches is a bird caught just as it has begun to fly. Hack is part of the process of training a
young bird. Imp means to repair a broken wing or tail feather. A Tess is the leather strap on the
hawk’s leg that the falconer holds on to. A mew is simply the hawk’s house. The term hawk is
used to refer to any bird of prey used in falconry. In some books on falconry, all hawks are
referred to as she because females were preferred over males due to their larger size and gentler
disposition.

These terms and the training methods used have not changed much over the centuries
They form a link with the past for the falconer. To engage in falconry today is to become part of
the world’s history.

The falconer’s tools shown here include a bag for carrying all kinds of paraphernalia,
hoods, imping needles, bells, a lure bag, and a creance, or rope used in training.
