GEOLOGICAL HAZARDS: LANDSLIDES, COASTAL EROSION,
DAM AND RESERVOIR FAILURES Slides order #321 ............$42.50

Landslides and their impact. Mudflows, rock falls and slides are classified and
compared. Italy's Vaiont Reservoir failure is emphasized with actual photographs and
graphic depiction. Erosion along the East and West coasts is explained and compared.
2O slides and guide.

CONTENT SAMPLE: INTRODUCTION. In this program, landslides, reservoir and dam
failures, and coastal erosion are examined. No attempt is made to discuss or examine the
broader field of seismic hazards except as it relates to the triggering of landslides. . . .

Three main categories of landslides have been recognized: 1. A slump involves failure of soil or
rock along a concave slip surface. The upper part of the slide rotates down and away from the
head scarp around a horizontal axis that parallels the slope. The toe of the slump is compressed
forward and up to form a fissured, hummocky terrain. 2. When clayey overburden on a slope
becomes supersaturated with water, the mixture can flow great distances. This kind of slope
failure is called a mudflow. Mudflows are common in well-watered mountainous terrains that have
been stripped of their vegetation by fire or lumbering. Climates with torrential rains have especially
troublesome mudflow problems. 3. In rugged mountainous regions such as the Andes or Alps,
steep slopes can fail when large volumes of rock become dislodged and fall vertically. These rock
falls are especially dangerous to small communities at the base of the Andes Mountains of South
America. . . .

EROSION Slides order #301............$42.50

Beneficial and harmful erosion on a large and small scale, natural and caused by
man are illustrated. Photos include destroyed forest, gullying, check dam, beaver dam,
limestone cave and ice scratches. Text discusses causes, remedies, the role of the
individual, for good or bad. 2O slides and guide.

CONTENT SAMPLE: 10675 When the protective plant layer is destroyed, erosion
begins in tiny ways, with the impact of each rain drop landing on the exposed soil. This is not the
moon’s landscape, but rather a very close-up picture of a few square inches of fine, loose, clay
soil exposed when a layer of mosses was disrupted. The rain pounded down, washing tiny grains
of soil away and forming valleys and gullies. The pinnacles and peaks that remain indicate the
former height of the soil. They were protected and preserved by the tiny tuft of moss that is
growing on each peak. But there are too few tufts of moss remaining, and it is only a matter of
time until these peaks are undercut and washed away too, exposing still more of the underlying
soil to erosion.

CANYON COUNTRY Slides order #307............$42.50

Presents the geology and geologic history of the great scenic canyon region of
the American Southwest. Details characteristics of the rock layers portrayed and traces
the geological events that created these formations. 20 slides and guide.

CONTENT SAMPLE: 11984 Today this is harsh, arid, rocky country, but eons ago it
was all under water, the floor of a vast sea. Eventually, the sea retreated and 70 or so million
years ago, forces deep in the earth began to push this plateau region upward, causing rivers and
streams to flow faster and cut sharply down through the layers of soft sedimentary rock, former
seabed, forming the plateau. In the millions of years since this movement began, the rivers have
carved deep, magnificent canyons, exposing many thousand of feet of rock otherwise hidden from
view. The arid climate, nonexistent soil layer and sparse vegetation in this area have hastened the
erosion process.

KARST LANDFORMS Slides order #335........$42.95

The hydrology of limestone terrains is described as the formation and nature of
some of the world’s most interesting and spectacular scenery is explored. Examples are
from France, Italy, Yugoslavia, Greece and the UK. 20 slides and guide.

CLIFFS Slides order #336........$42.95

The importance of rock type, structure and process in cliff formation is
emphasized. Most examples are of coastal features, but some are of inland locations. 20
slides and guide.
