CLOUDS Slides order #781...........$42.50

Clouds are one of the most obvious phenomena in meteorology. Often beautiful,
they can bring torrential downpours and damaging hail storms. Program emphasizes
identification, formation and their significance in weather forecasting. Presents common
clouds of high, middle and low classifications: cirrus, cirrocumulus, cirrostratus,
altostratus, nimbostratus, altocumulus, alto and low cumulus, lenticularis, cumulus,
cumulonimbus, stage II, anvil, stratocumulus, stratus, fogs. 2O slides and guide.

CONTENT SAMPLE: 822 When the cumulonimbus reaches an altitude sufficient
to cause precipitation (10-15 km), this marks the beginning of the second or mature stage.

The falling rain drags air down and cools it so that a strong down draft is created. This
causes the chilly wind that precedes the heavy rain accompanying thunderstorms. Not only can
we expect rain, often of cloudburst proportions, but the subfreezing temperatures in the upper
parts of the cloud can also cause hail. In fact, hail falls only from a cumulonimbus.

In this stage, vertical development may reach a height of 25 km. It is during this stage
that thunder and lightning may occur. A good thunderstorm can generate more energy than an
atomic bomb. The powerful up and down drafts are dangerous to aircraft, so pilots try to avoid
them. The strong winds, rain and hail can cause severe damage on the ground.

WEATHER AWARENESS AND SURVIVAL Video order #FV-1061V..........$49.95

WEATHER IN THE WILDERNESS: explains weather maps, reports, air currents
and clouds. An introduction to making and using weather forecasts, important knowledge
that could be life saving. In-depth coverage of hypothermia, including when, why and how
it is likely to occur, warning signals and how to treat it.

COLD WEATHER SURVIVAL: Snowstorms are beautiful and romping in the
snow is great fun, but this safety filmstrip helps make students aware of some of the
hazards of winter weather. Coverage includes snow characteristics, effects of wind and
weather, slab snow, slides and avalanches, what to do if you are caught in a storm and
hypothermia.

REVIEWS: "Well chosen pictures range from...maps and charts to stunning scenery."
Previews. "Observational skills are stressed as well as basic understanding of common weather
situations." Media & Methods.

THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT Slides order #SS-0975S........$37.50

Human activities such as fossil-fuel combustion, deforestation and emission of
particulate matter into the atmosphere may be shifting the delicate climatic balance that
poses our interglacial age between ice and flood. Change is inevitable, but in which
direction, and how fast? 15 frames and guide. (Filmstrip #SS-0975F........$15.00.)

CONTENT SAMPLE: 6. The atmosphere does not allow the long-wave radiations
emitted from the earth to escape directly into space. This is called the "greenhouse effect"
because it is analogous to heat retention in a greenhouse. The glass windows of a greenhouse
readily transmit the incoming solar radiation, but some of the re-radiated long-wave radiation
cannot escape through the glass. This infrared radiation is reflected by the glass walls back into
the greenhouse where it warms the air, soil and plants to temperatures that are higher than that of
the air outside. The same principle is being incorporated into the design of solar panels for
heating water or even entire buildings. Here the efficiency is enhanced by circulating warm air
through reservoirs of rocks or waters. These reservoirs serve to trap the re-radiated infrared
radiations, much as do the soil and ocean of the earth.

AIR POLLUTION Slides order #SS-0080S........$49.95

Select photographs from across the nation depict contributors to our polluted air.
25 frames and guide. (Filmstrip SS-0080F........$15.00.)

CONTENT SAMPLE: 10. Energy production produces carbon particles (soot) and
gases that are belched out into our air. One of the gases, H2S, combines with oxygen in the air
forming S02, S03, and sulfuric acid, all of which cause respiratory problems.
