PLANT TISSUES UNDER THE SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPE
Slides order #242..........$42.50

Basic tissues of higher plants--monocots, dicots and some gymnosperms and
ferns--are studied by means of the SEM. Includes roots, stems (xylem elements,
vascular bundles), and leaves (surface, vascular bundles, stomata and guard cells,
trichomes). 2O slides and guide.

REVIEWS: "...slides are of excellent quality and scope...The images are sharp, and the
three-dimensional shape of the plant structures...is strikingly visible... Accompanying written
description that is invaluable background information... These slides provide an added dimension
to light microscope slides..." Choice. "...an excellent supplement to the textbook. The print
explanations...give more than sufficient detail." Media Review.

FLOWER STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION Slides order #SS-0930S ..........$42.50

Classification with reference to the presence or absence and relative position of
floral parts. Pollination, fertilization, and the life span of flowers are presented in relation to
their reproductive cycle. 17 frames, guide. (Filmstrip order #SS-0930F ...............$15.00.)

FRUIT AND SEED STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION Slides order #SS-0935S ........$42.50

Fruits are classified by main types, with subdivisions in each grouping. Fertil-
ization and the subsequent development of the embryo into a seed, the maturation of
the ovary into a fruit, and the dispersal and germination of mature seeds are presented
in relation to their occurrence in the natural life cycle of flowering plants. 19 frames, guide.
(Filmstrips order #SS-0935F..........$15.00.)

LEAF STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION Slides order #SS-0920S ...........$39.95

The major functions of plant leaves are photosynthesis and respiration. The
internal structure of leaves is shown in relation to these functions. Externally, leaves are
classified in several ways according to overall shape, venation, family, and life span. The
processes of plant leaves makes them crucial to our earth's ecological balance. l5
frames, guide. (Filmstrips order #SS-0920F .......... $15.00.)

CONTENT SAMPLE: 5. An examination of the external structure of a leaf shows
how well suited it is for carrying on photosynthesis. Leaves are outgrowths from the stem of a
plant. In dicotyledonous leaves (from an embryo with 2 seed-leaves) (monocotyledons--from
embryos with one seed-leaf--will be dealt with separately) it is a flattened green blade or lamina
attached to the stem by a petiole. Some leaves have two small leaf-like outgrowths at the base of
the petiole called stipules. The petiole is usually attached at the base of the leaf. Occasionally it
is attached to the leaf's underside instead and this type of leaf is called a peltate. In some plants
(such as the zinnia) the blade is mounted directly on the stem without a petiole and the leaf is
said to be sessile. Leaves come in a huge variety of shapes and certain terms are used to
accurately describe their appearance. The shape of a leaf may be long and slender (linear),
heart-shaped (cordate), or triangular (deltoid). The leaf margin may have deep indentations or
lobes, or it may be toothed, scalloped, wavy or entire (having no indentations).

STEM STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION Slides order #SS-0915S ......$49.95

Stems develop from buds and fall into several groupings: monocot or dicot and
herbaceous or woody. The external and internal (primary and secondary) development of
herbaceous and woody stems is shown with reference to their functions. 24 frames,
guide. (Filmstrips order #SS-0915F ...........$15.00.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ROOT STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION Slides order #SS-0925S .......$29.95
Roots connect plants to vital water and nutrients in the soil. The structure of root
systems enables them to carry out their main functions: anchorage, absorption,
conduction and food storage. The internal and external characteristics of tap roots,
fibrous roots, and adventitious roots are related to their functions. 1O frames, guide.
