THE IMMUNE RESPONSE Slides order #SS-0520S.........$29.95

Quality artwork provides a detailed look at antibody formation and antigen-
antibody interactions. Explores the lymphatic system and passive and active immunity.
10 frames, cassette and guide. (Filmstrip order SS-0520F.......$15.00.)

CONTENT SAMPLE: 4. The specificity of the antigen-antibody reaction has baffled
scientists for many years. An individual mammal has about 30,000 genes that code for proteins,
yet it may produce a million different antibodies. A specific antibody is formed in response to just
about every antigen that is encountered.

Just how does an antibody or lymphocyte “recognize” an antigen? The recognition takes
place at the molecular level and involves a specific chemical binding combination. Similar to the
recognition of a particular substrate by an enzyme, the antibody fits with its antigen like the
pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. After binding, or agglutinating to the antigen, the antibody renders it
ineffective.

MUSCLE CONTRACTION Slides order #SS-1O20S........$42.50

The mechanical and chemical events of muscle contraction are explored, along
with the regulatory processes which integrate their functions with those of the whole
organism. 20 frames and guide. (Filmstrip order SS-1O20F.....$15.00.)

CONTENT SAMPLE: 8. Muscle action potentials travel along the membrane
(sarcolemma) that surrounds the muscle fiber and reach the myofibrils within the fiber through
transverse tubules. These tubules are invaginations of the sarcolemma that descend to within a
micron of each sarcomere. In mammals the t-tubules are located at the edge of the A and I
bands; while in frogs (shown here) t-tubules occur at each Z line.

As an action potential sweeps along the sarcolemma it causes relatively large amounts
of calcium ions (Ca++) to be released from the t-tubules into the sarcoplasm surrounding the
myofilaments. Calcium ions bring about muscle contraction in two ways.

HORMONES Slides order #SS-0040S…..$42.50

Describes how hormones chemically regulate life processes in plants and
animals. Includes a survey from nonvascular to vascular organisms. 22 frames and guide.
(Filmstrip order SS-0040F......$15.00.)

CONTENT SAMPLE: 13. Third are the protein hormones. Insulin’s presence aids
glucose diffusion into cells; thyrotropic hormone stimulates thyroxin release; adrenocorticotropic
hormone stimulates the adrenals to secrete steroids; prolactin stimulates secretion of corpus
luteum products (in the ovary); gonadotropics control estrous/menstrual cycles of females and
some sex-related activities in males; growth hormone stimulates growth and antagonizes insulin’s
actions.
