THE PROTOZOA Slides order #SS-0230S.........$42.50

A set of full color photos of selected common protozoa representing the various
classes. These are photomicrographs of living specimens. 2O frames and guide.
(Filmstrip order SS-0230F.......$15.00.)

CONTENT SAMPLE: 5. This sarcodine is a radiolarian. These ocean dwelling
protozoans have a small skeleton (test) through which the pseudopodia protrude. When they die
the tests sink to the ocean bottom forming a layer of ooze.

AMOEBA, PARAMECIUM, VOLVOX AND EUGLENA Slides order #SS-0985S......$72.50

An anatomical and physiological study of four common organisms employing art
and photography. Foods, feeding, external and internal anatomy, and modes of
reproduction are considered. 4O frames & guide. (Filmstrips (4) SS 0985F.....$30.00.)

CONTENT SAMPLE: 2. Here is a closer look at the structure of Amoeba proteus.
The irregular, asymmetric form is typical of the sarcodines. Notice there is no rigid pellicle
surrounding the plastic membrane. It is this plasticity of the cell membrane that allows
amoeba to assume virtually any shape.

Inside the cell membrane is the cytoplasm. This can be divided into the ectoplasm, a
clear gel directly under the membrane, and the endoplasm, a granular, viscous liquid that can
change from a semi solid gel, the plasmagel, to a less viscous liquid, plasmasol. These forms of
the endoplasm play a major role in amoeboid movement.

Within the endoplasm are the organelles and other bodies. The nucleus, a biconcave
disc seen here, is the storehouse of the genetic material, the chromatin. Amoeba proteus has
one nucleus; other members of the genus may have more than one.

AMEBOID, CILIARY AND FLAGELLAR MOVEMENT Slides order #SS-0450X.....$42.50

Movement in unicellular animals. A study of the motility of Amoeba and human
amebocytes, and a look into the biological mechanisms of cilia and flagella, motile yet
nonmuscular organelles. 2O frames and guides. (Filmstrips (2) order SS-0450F...$15.00.)

CONTENT SAMPLE: 1. These are photomicrographs of one-celled organisms:
Euglena (left) and Paramecium (right). The long, whip-like protrusion from the cell body of
Euglena is a flagellum. The numerous short projections on the Paramecium are cilia. Both
function in locomotion. There are no structural or functional differences between cilia and flagella
except that flagella are usually longer and less numerous. Flagella range up to 150 microns
compared to 5 to 10 microns for cilia, and there are usually 1 to 4 flagella per individual
compared to thousands of cilia.
